Perseverance vs. Quitting

Every artist has had a moment where they have contemplated quitting or been tempted to do so. Life can bring on it's ups and downs which can invade the mind. Some days can be darker than night. However, dawn breaks each day with vivid colors if we just take a moment to look. My first encouragement to my fellow artists is don't quit! Having an artistic ability is a great privilege! Not everyone can do what you do. Some have been known to say, "I would give my eyeteeth to be able to do what you do!" We should not take this ability for granted.

Every life touches another whether we realize this or not. People notice what you do. Especially children. When I do artwork or teach it, a part of me hopes to pass this torch to the next generation. May the 'fire' be lit to ignite a passion for art! Art is a form of communication that is worldwide. Language barriers limit many of us. However, art which is seen can communicate to races, cultures, countries, families and individuals.

"We dishonor God when we take for granted what he's given to us, no matter how small or insignificant we think it is....Determination is an essential trait for an artist, and it becomes more ingrained in us every time we refuse to give up." - (Rory Noland - "Thriving as an Artist in the Church") Learn not to quit. There are benefits to perseverance. One of the benefits is learning. We can learn from our successes as well as our mistakes. Another benefit is we may be an encouragement to others in the same situation. Quitting will not make you happier. My fellow artists, you need your art.

Perhaps you are not an artist. This message can also be for you in the work you know is a part of what has been graciously given to you.

Always push yourself. Be discontent enough to push yourself to the next level. This is reverencing the gift that was placed inside you. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Perseverance: the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult.

May your legacy and mine be one of persevering to the end. Enduring the cost of effort and time for our benefit as well as for others.
